Medifast, Inc. today announced that Director of Research & Development, Lisa M. Davis, Ph.D., PA-C, C.N.S., L.D.N., has co-authored a book investigating ways to incorporate Omega-3-rich foods into the diet to fight arthritis, cancer, heart disease and other health issues. “Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health” is co-authored by Barbara Rowe, M.P.H., R.D., L.D., C.N.S.D., and is scheduled for release on January 1, 2008.

“One of the best ways to achieve optimal health is to incorporate more Omega-3s into your diet,” says Davis. “‘Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health’ will be a great resource for Americans to learn more about anti-inflammatory foods and how they can easily add more Omega-3s to their diets, and at Medifast we’ll be incorporating Omega-3’s into our program with new products and programs for our customers in early 2008”

Swelling, redness and heat are the body’s acute inflammatory responses to trauma, and an essential part of the healing process. Inflammation can be harmful when it lasts too long and the body reacts as though under attack. Researchers are now linking low-grade, persistent inflammation to premature aging, heart disease, MS, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, psoriasis, arthritis and cancer.

Some types of inflammation can be remedied by a change in diet, specifically by altering the types of fats consumed. Omega-3 fatty acids tend to decrease inflammation, while Omega-6 fatty acids increase inflammation. While many foods in the standard American diet exacerbate inflammation, a healthy diet made up of fish, nuts, seeds, oils, lean grass-fed meats, fruits and vegetables can help lessen or prevent inflammation.

“Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health” will help those with inflammation incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into their everyday diets. Sample recipes include French-Canadian pea soup, sumac salmon, maple-ginger butternut squash, lime-ginger glazed chicken with fennel relish, green salad with grapes and sunflower seeds and cod with saffron sauce.

Davis was previously a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Md., and a clinician at the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center. She has been quoted frequently in the popular press regarding inflammation and diet. Her research involves examining the relationship between brain neurotransmitters and markers of inflammation.

Rowe has more than sixteen years of experience as a dietician and was a program manager at John Hopkins Weight Management Center. She has worked individually with countless clients to help them manage their health through diet and has authored several articles on nutrition and inflammation. Rowe uses her vast knowledge of nutrition to develop tasty recipes that promote good health.

“Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health” is being published by Fair Winds Press, an imprint of Quayside Publishing Group, publishers of cook books, health and body books, self-help books, lifestyle books, spirituality books and free masonry books.
